The Chairman of the Supervisory Board of SRPA “Impulse” Volodymyr Yelisyeyev took part in the meeting of the operations centre as to implementation of the modernized nuclear fuel manufactured by the Westinghouse Company (ТВС-WR) at power units of Ukrainian NPPs, the meeting took place at the site of Zaporizhzhya NPP on 30 May 2018. The meeting of the centre was headed by the President – Executive Director of Westinghouse Electric (Asia) S.A. Jose Emeterio Gutierrez and the President of NNEGC “Energoatom” Yuriy Nedashkovskiy. Also, the Head of the State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine Hryhorii Plachkov, the People’s Deputy of Ukraine Victoria Voytsytskaya, the representatives of the Ministry of Energy and Coal Industry of Ukraine, the State Scientific and Technical Centre for Nuclear and Radiation Safety (SSTC NRS), etc. took part in the work of the centre.
When opening the meeting, the President of NNEGC “Energoatom” Yuriy Nedashkovskiy emphasized importance of the event that was intended to solve the strategic issues both in the Company itself and in the nuclear power industry of Ukraine.
“The representative delegation headed by the chief executive officers of Westinghouse, SNRIU, SSTC NRS, and the Ministry of Energy and Coal Industry has gathered at the industrial site of Zaporizhzhya NPP today to solve issues concerning implementation of the modernized nuclear fuel manufactured by the Westinghouse Company at power units of Ukrainian NPPs. The main result of the operations centre - works are done according to the schedule. All issues mentioned in the previous resolutions of the centres and in the program on implementation of the fuel by the Westinghouse Company, are settled in the regular course of work. We are pleased to note that cooperation between NNEGC “Energoatom” and Westinghouse develops both in regards to diversification of nuclear fuel supplies and under the safety improvement program,” - emphasized Yuriy Nedashkovskiy.
The President of Westinghouse Electric Company Jose Emeterio Gutierrez thanked the President of NNEGC “Energoatom” Yuriy Nedashkovskiy for the opportunity to visit Zaporizhzhya NPP. “The Westinghouse Company and Ukraine started their cooperation more than 20 years ago. We worked hard to establish the successful cooperation and we are very much interested in the success of Energoatom because the success of the Westinghouse Company also directly depends on the success of Energoatom. Ukraine made a strategic decision in due time to diversify the nuclear fuel supplies. This has not only opened a window of new opportunities for our company, but also has become an honour for us to supply nuclear fuel to the operator of Ukrainian NPPs. Westinghouse will do its best to provide Energoatom with the premium products and services on a permanent basis”, - stressed Jose Emeterio Guttierez.
As known, SRPA “Impulse” executes modernization of in-core monitoring systems within implementation at Ukrainian NPPs of technologies assuring the required reliability and safety level when operating cores loaded with fuel of different manufacturers - Westinghouse and “TVEL”. During the modernization process, “Impulse” implemented several solutions of this task simultaneously – across with integration of the BEACON software system (developed by Westinghouse), the own methodology was developed to receive neutron and physical constants, which assures the possibility of further use of existing in-core monitoring systems without the necessity to implement the BEACON system. Moreover, development of the own neutron and physical and thermal and hydraulic software code – the National Calculation System has been started and processes actively, the code according to its capabilities, scale, and effectiveness is in advance of the BEACON system and other calculation facilities existing in Ukraine significantly and will allow creating a complete (closed) cycle of development-manufacturing-implementation-support of in-core monitoring systems in our country.
It is assumed that in 2019-2021 the cores of power units 1, 3, 4, and 5 of Zaporizhzhya NPP will be fully composed of the nuclear fuel manufactured by Westinghouse. Now it is planned to continue operating power units 2 and 6 of ZNPP using only the Russian nuclear fuel.
Reference. Zaporizhzhya NPP is the largest power facility in Ukraine and Europe with the installed capacity 6 000 MW. Power unit 1 was commissioned in 1984, power unit 2 – in 1985, power unit 3 – in 1986, power unit 4 – in 1987, power unit 5 – in 1989, power unit 6 – in 1995. Starting from 1984, the contribution of Zaporizhzhya NPP in the power industry of the country increased from 2 to 22%.
